The short answer
Follow the story until the map opens up, learn one district properly instead of five badly, and don’t spend money on anything you can’t afford twice. Everything else can wait.
A Grand Theft Auto opening is a bad place to improvise. The map is large, the systems arrive faster than the tutorial explains them, and the first mistakes tend to be expensive ones. This guide gives you a sequence, in order, with reasons.
One caveat we’ll repeat: GTA 6 is not out. Everything below is built on series structure and Rockstar’s own footage, and every step is labelled with how confident we are. Nothing here is invented mission detail.
The first three hours, step by step
Let the opening play out (Series pattern)
0:00 – 0:25
Every GTA opens with a scripted stretch that hands you the map, the phone and the basic verbs. Skipping ahead to free roam isn’t usually possible, and rushing it costs you the systems tutorial.
Rockstar has not detailed GTA 6’s opening. Treat the timing here as a series-shaped estimate, not a walkthrough.
Adjust controls and driving camera first (Do this now)
0:25 – 0:35
Aim assist, driving camera height and sensitivity are the three settings that change how the whole game feels. Set them before you build muscle memory around defaults you’ll later abandon.
If GTA V is your reference point, expect to spend ten minutes here and save yourself hours of fighting the camera.
Learn one district, not the whole state (Recommended)
0:35 – 1:20
Leonida is a state, not a city, official footage shows wetlands, keys and highway distance between places. Trying to see all of it in hour one leaves you with no mental map of anywhere.
Pick the district the story starts you in. Drive its perimeter once, note the hospital, the police presence and two ways out. That’s the foundation everything else sits on.
Keep a clean vehicle and a spare (Series pattern)
1:20 – 1:50
A car you like and a car you can lose is the oldest GTA advice there is. Missions punish improvised vehicle theft with wanted levels at exactly the wrong moment.
Whether GTA 6 uses garages, impound or something new hasn’t been announced. The habit is worth having regardless.
Run the story to the first big unlock (Recommended)
0:35 – 1:20
In prior games, story progress is what unlocks map regions, mechanics and money sources. Side content done too early is side content done at half value.
Jason and Lucia are confirmed as playable leads presented as a pair. How the game moves between them is not confirmed — we’ll document it when it’s playable, not before.
Bank the first money, spend nothing (Do this now)
2:40 – 3:00
Early GTA money is scarce and early purchases are almost always worse than the ones two hours later. Hold it.
Anyone telling you exact GTA 6 prices, businesses or investment returns right now is guessing. There is no published economy data.
Tips that carry over from every GTA
Drive, don’t sprint
Traversal on foot is slow by design in open-world Rockstar games. If a marker is off-screen, find wheels.
Wanted level is geography
Breaking line of sight matters more than speed. Tunnels, alleys and water have historically been your friends.
Save before experimenting
Manual saves cost seconds. Losing a mission chain to curiosity costs a lot more.
Read the phone
Rockstar has used the in-game phone as the main content dispatcher for two generations. Check it between missions.
Common mistakes
Chasing collectibles in hour one
Collectible routes depend on map access you don’t have yet. You’ll walk the same ground twice.
Trusting leaked mission lists
No verified GTA 6 mission list exists. Following one means following someone’s fan fiction.
Buying the first thing you can afford
Early prices look reasonable only because you haven’t seen what’s two missions away.
Playing with defaults you hate
Ten minutes in the settings menu is the highest-return time investment available at the start.
FAQ
Is this guide based on the actual game?
No — GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026. This guide is built from Rockstar’s official footage and structural patterns across the series, and every step says which. We’ll rewrite it with verified detail once the game is playable.
Do I need to play GTA V first?
No. Rockstar’s mainline entries are self-contained stories. GTA V helps only in that its controls and systems are the closest reference point.
Which platform should I play on?
GTA 6 has been announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version has been announced, and we won’t speculate about one.
Will this guide be updated at launch?
Yes, with a dated changelog. Steps that turn out to be wrong will be corrected in place with a note, not quietly deleted.
